Halloran, Golubock to Receive
Presidential Medal of Distinction
Bradford, PA – Harry R. Halloran Jr., board chairman and owner of American Refining Group, and Harvey L. Golubock, ARG’s president and chief operating officer, whose contributions to the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford have generated both academic and physical growth, will receive the Presidential Medal of Distinction, the university’s highest honor.
“As representatives for ARG and as individuals, Mr. Halloran and Mr. Golubock are among our strongest supporters,” said Dr. Livingston Alexander, university president. “Their gifts of property and funding for scholarships and energy-related projects will enable us to make college more affordable for our students and position our institution to better serve the workforce and knowledge needs of the bustling oil and gas industries.
“We are very fortunate and deeply grateful to Harry Halloran and Harvey Golubock for their steadfast support of and commitment to Pitt-Bradford,” Alexander added.
Two of their most significant gifts have been received within the past couple of years.
Most recently, ARG and Halloran Philanthropies gave the university a gift of $500,000. The first half of the gift will be endowed, and funds generated from the endowment will support scholarships. The second half of the gift will be used to help Pitt-Bradford develop its Energy Institute, which will foster the study of traditional fossil-fuel applications and pilot renewable energy projects.
In 2006, ARG donated to the university 130 acres of land on West Corydon Street, which at that time had an appraised value of $140,000. The gift of property nearly doubled the physical size of the campus. Profits from future sales of timber on the property will be used to establish a scholarship fund for the children of ARG employees.
Golubock will receive the award during the university’s annual commencement exercises, which will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27, in the arena of the Sport and Fitness Center. Halloran, who is unable to attend, will be recognized during the ceremony.
“To be included among the distinguished former recipients of this prestigious award is an honor that neither Harry nor I ever expected,” Golubock said. “Our contributions were and are made because we believe in the Bradford community and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. While Harry and I proudly accept these awards, we do so on behalf of all of our employees who have contributed to the company’s success. Their dedication, determination and resourcefulness have enabled us to give something back to the community that has supported our efforts over the past 11 years.”
Pitt-Bradford presents the Presidential Medal of Distinction to a person who has either volunteered his or her time for several years; supported the university either financially or with expertise or advice; served the university’s service region through community, government or business affiliation; or has made distinctive achievements in his or her field that have affected Pitt-Bradford.
Previous medal winners were Madeline Miles, Judge John M. Cleland, Dr. Richard E. McDowell, Dennis Lowery, Edwin Clemens, Marilyn Horne, Howard Fesenmyer, Henry P. Pruch, Robert D. Galey, Lester Rice, William F. Higie, Samuel Gregg Jr., Dr. Robert C. Laing, Harriett B. Wick, Sarah B. Dorn, U.S. Rep. John E. Peterson, Virginia L. Miles and Dr. Robert B. Bromeley.
In addition to his work at ARG, Halloran is also the chairman and chief executive officer of ARG Resources. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in civil engineering. After graduating, he entered the Augustinian seminary for four years and earned a master’s degree in theology.
He is the founder and CEO of Energy Unlimited Inc. a company involved in the renewable energy field and has served on the board of The American Wind Energy Association. Previously, he was a trustee of Villanova University’s College of Commerce and Finance and of The Academy of Natural Sciences. He is also the founding trustee of The Enlightened World Foundation and the Halloran Foundation. He is a member of the Caux Round Table and serves on the Board of The Journal of Ecumenical Studies.
Halloran founded the Halloran Philanthropies in 2007 with the belief that business is one of the most powerful drivers for positive social change. The purpose of the Halloran Philanthropies is to help create a healthier world community that promotes economic development through microfinance, global business ethics and community service to revitalize low-income neighborhoods.
He and his wife, Kay, live in Villanova.
Golubock has served on Pitt-Bradford’s Advisory Board since 1998 and is a member of its Executive Committee. He is chairman of the board’s Student Affairs Council and a member of the Governance Council. He will also serve as co-chairman of Pitt-Bradford’s next capital campaign.
Golubock was with Witco Corp. for 28 years, having started in 1969. At that time, he made the first of many subsequent trips to Bradford. His last position at Witco was as group vice president of lubricants. In 1997, he presided over the sale of the Bradford refinery to ARG, at which time Halloran recruited him to run his new purchase.
Golubock is chairman of the board of Beacon Light Behavioral Health Systems and co-chairman of the Bradford Area Alliance. He also serves as chairman of the Economic Development Committee for the Bradford Regional Planning Initiative and is a member of the board of the Penn Brad Museum.
He is a member of the National Petrochemical and Refiner’s Association and a former chairman of its Lubricants and Wax Committee, and is a member of the Independent Lubricants Manufacturers Association, the Pennsylvania Oil & Gas Association and the Ohio Oil and Gas Association.
He holds a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from City College of New York, and master of business administration degree from Rutgers University.
He and his wife, Barbara, live in Bradford and Suffern, N.Y.
