Former Kendall GM Saunders passed away this week

BRADFORD, Pa. – American Refining Group Inc. (ARG) in 1997 purchased the Bradford refinery formerly owned by Witco Corp. and, before that, Kendall Refining Co. Ray Saunders, 95, former Kendall general manager at the refinery, passed away this week. In a note to employees this morning, current ARG President and COO Jon Giberson shared the news of Saunders’s passing.

We learned today that Ray Saunders, 95, former general manager of the Bradford refinery under Kendall Refining Co., passed away in his sleep Tuesday, April 13.

Ray was general manager of Kendall Refining Co. from 1971 to 1981 and remained a member of our Quarter Century Club. The Penn Brad Oil Museum recognized Ray with its 2019 Yellow Dog Award for his service to the local oil industry and the Bradford community. That same year I had the chance to meet Ray shortly after taking the helm here for ARG. We enjoyed a pleasant conversation during which Ray’s incredible memory was on full display as we compared notes from careers shared in this industry and at this refinery. You may remember the Summer 2019 edition of the Yellow Dog Gazette recounting our visit and Ray’s story in greater detail.

I was truly honored to meet Ray; he was a kind, intelligent man whose leadership of this refinery we all benefit from today. It’s for Ray that our Main Office’s American flag will fly at half-staff during the next few days. We offer sincere wishes for peace to Ray and his family at this time.
